  1. South Korean social-democratic politician. As
  2. a committed opponent of the regime of Gen
  3. Park Chung Hee, he suffered imprisonment and
  4. exile. He was a presidential candidate in
  5. 1971 and 1987. A Roman Catholic, born in the
  6. poor SW province of Cholla, Kim was
  7. imprisoned by communist troops during the
  8. Korean War. He rose to prominence as an
  9. opponent of Park and was only narrowly
  10. defeated when he challenged Park for the
  11. presidency in 1971. He was imprisoned 1976-78
  12. and 1980-82 for alleged `anti-government
  13. activities' and lived in the USA 1982-85. On
  14. his return to South Korea he spearheaded a
  15. fragmented opposition campaign for
  16. democratization, but, being one of several
  17. opposition candidates, was defeated by the
  18. government nominee, Roh Tae Woo, in the
  19. presidential election of Dec 1987. A
  20. political firebrand, Kim enjoys strong
  21. support among blue-collar workers and fellow
  22. Chollans, but is feared and distrusted by the
  23. country's business and military elite.
